Alethea Chaney Serpell Patrick Edwards, born November 1, 1912, a former
resident of Houston, Texas and native of Norfolk, VA, passed away peacefully
in her home at Westpointe Retirement Community, Pensacola, FL on Saturday,
October 9, 2004.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, H. Banks Edwards, and three sons
and their wives, H. Banks Edwards, Jr. and Gail Blanchard, G. Serpell
Edwards and Betsy Baie, and William B. Edwards and Susan Chalmers as well as
nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews
Her parents, Jane Serpell and Capt. Bower Reynolds Patrick, USN, CHC, her
sisters Jane Patrick Thompson and Elizabeth Patrick Hooper, and her brothers
Bower R. Patrick, Jr. and R. Adm. G. Serpell Patrick preceded her in death.
Having grown up in a Navy family, she loved the ocean. Alethea was an avid
gardener, birder and amateur naturalist, having majored in zoology at
Hollins College in Va. She loved little children and is remembered quite
fondly by her grandchildren.
Services were held at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd,
Pensacola, FL at 10 am, Wednesday, October 13, 2004 with internment
following at Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola., section 50, plot
626
Pallbearers were H. Banks Edwards, Jr., G. Serpell Edwards, William B.
Edwards, Jason P. Edwards, Rachael E. Johnson and Jeremy S. Johnson.
Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a local Hospice organization or
to the Houston Zoo.
