JOSEPHINE BANKS MCKAY SHEFTALL

 

            Josephine Banks “Jo Banks” McKay Sheftall, 85, widow of William Lowe Sheftall, Jr., died at home in Columbus , Georgia , on Tuesday evening, March 17, 2009 .

 

            Funeral services will be held graveside at Riverside Cemetery , Macon , Georgia , on Saturday, March 21, 2009 , at 11 a.m.  Officiating will be the Rev. Gordon K. Reed, former minister of First Presbyterian Church, Macon.  Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in Columbus is in charge of arrangements.

 

            Mrs. Sheftall was born in Columbus April 27, 1923 , the eldest child of  Josephine Banks Dimon of Columbus and John James McKay, Jr., of Macon .  She spent her early childhood in Columbus.  In 1925 her parents relocated to Macon , where she was graduated first from Miller High School and then, in 1944, from Wesleyan College .  Subsequently, she lived and worked in both New York City and San Francisco before her marriage to Mr. Sheftall in Macon April 3, 1951 .  The Sheftalls made their home first in Panama City , Florida , and then, for almost forty years, in Macon ;  they moved to Columbus in 1996 to live near their son John and his family at The Cedars, Mrs. Sheftall’s ancestral home.  

 

             Mrs. Sheftall was active in community work in Macon , especially the Museum of Arts and Sciences, serving both as president and chairman of the board.  She was also a former officer of both the Junior League of Macon and the Macon History Club.  She was an active member for many years in other organizations, including the Georgia Historical Society, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, Historic Macon Foundation, and Historic Columbus Foundation.  She was a fifth generation member of First Presbyterian Church in Macon .

 

Mrs. Sheftall was preceded in death in 2005 by her husband of 54 years.  She is survived by a son, William Lowe Sheftall, Jr. [III], and his wife, Carol Harden Sheftall, of Thomasville, Georgia; a son, John McKay Sheftall, and his wife, Lucy Tresp Sheftall, of Columbus; four grandchildren, William Lowe Sheftall IV, Lucy Banks Sheftall, John McKay Sheftall, Jr., and Andrew Tresp Sheftall; a step-granddaughter, Mary Beth Dyke of Atlanta, Georgia; a sister, Sarah Watkins McKay Hairston of Albany, Georgia; and nieces and nephews.

Lyle Shipley (Banks) SHEPHERD, April 25, 2011. in Albuquerque, NM, Bernallilo Co.  She was born July 7, 1947 in Tampa, Fl., Hillsborough Co.  She was the daughter of  Thomas Robinson BANKS 1913-1965 and Mary Lyle (Shipley) BANKS 1914-1986.
